Title: CW3E Subseasonal and Seasonal Research, Experimental Forecast Product Development, and Stakeholder Interaction: Applications During Winter 2022-2023

Abstract: The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) has developed an extensive suite of experimental subseasonal and seasonal forecast products for hydroclimate variables over the western U.S. region. These are supported by peer-reviewed hindcast skill assessments and were developed in tandem with stakeholders at the California Department of Water Resources. In addition, CW3E has led the creation of experimental subseasonal and seasonal synthesis products, which seek to integrate forecast information for these variables across different methodologies and institutions/agencies. This talk will provide an overview of these efforts in the context of the historic 3-week period during Winter 2022-2023, when nine atmospheric rivers made landfall along the California coastline and significantly alleviated the preceding multi-year drought.

The Department of Earth System Science acknowledges our presence on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Acjachemen and Tongva peoples, who still hold strong cultural, spiritual and physical ties to this region.
